First Test Of Alert London A Success

The City of London has deemed the first test of the City’s emergency notification system… a success.

During the test, 173,000 calls, text messages and emails were completed successfully, with 12,000 individuals also confirming they had received the test notification call. Only 283 calls were unsuccessful due to failure, or the phone number being unreachable (0.164%).

Alert London took place for Emergency Preparedness Week and on the heels of provincial testing, that began across the country on Monday.

“The purpose of this test was to learn and to evaluate the capability of our notification system. The focus of this week is on emergency preparedness and on ensuring that as a community, we have processes and systems in place to keep the community safe,” said Dave O’Brien, Division Manager, Security and Emergency Management. “We’ve had a handful of calls from residents with feedback. Overall, we are very pleased with the results, and feel confident that in the event of an emergency, the system would serve the community well.”

Residents who received a call but were not home to answer can expect to find voice messages on their answering machines that were left during the test. No action is required if that happens.

Alert London is set up to notify any published residential or business phone number, and reach people who sign up for the service through their preferred means of communications – text, email or phone. In the event of an emergency, the system will provide critical public safety messages.
