Ice Storm Ravishes Region, Dampens Londoners’ Weekends

London and most of the surrounding area spent most of the weekend under a blanket of freezing rain and wet snow.

The frozen drizzle from Saturday that had tapered off to rain by the evening, was back on Sunday morning. And though it would give way to rain again by mid-day, there were many fallen trees, flight cancellations, and power outages.

After virtually all flights at London Airport were cancelled on Saturday, many were again cancelled or delayed on Sunday.

London Hydro and Hydro One both reported outages throughout the area. People in Old South in London, amongst others, were without power on both Saturday and Sunday afternoons. As of Sunday evening, London Hydro were not reporting any issues, but Hydro One were still dealing with several outages that left thousands in the dark.

Environment Canada warned over the weekend, that localized flooding from the accumulation of precipitation was possible, so the Upper Thames River Conservation Authority is under a flood watch. The ground is already saturated and unable to absorb the rainfall, so water levels rose considerably over the weekend; but did not reach near the 40-year flood levels the region saw in February.
